Sedation dentistry is when a patient receives sedation during a dental procedure. There are various methods to deliver the sedation that INSPIRE DENTAL OF ALEXANDRIA may choose from, and there are also different levels of sedation dentistry. The various methods and levels of sedation each have their unique benefits and are appropriate for different situations.

Many people feel anxious or nervous when planning to see the dentist.  Some patients become so concerned that they avoid scheduling an appointment all together, which will only result in more serious issues developing. Our goal is to provide everything necessary to make sure that your visit with us is a comfortable and calming experience. We offer a range of sedation options to ensure your comfort.

Dental Procedures Where Sedation Dentistry is Beneficial

Certain dental procedures which are more involved, such as surgical tooth extractions, root canal treatment, periodontal surgery, and implant placement are good opportunities to consider sedation dentistry. Along with these regular procedures, the use of sedation for other treatment is oftentimes decided at the discretion of INSPIRE DENTAL OF ALEXANDRIA and you. We can decide to provide sedation for procedures that are more intensive, or we might decide to offer sedation if you are extremely anxious.

The Benefits of Sedation Dentistry

The benefits of sedation dentistry can be significant. One of the most obvious benefits from sedation dentistry is the extreme reduction of stress or anxiety experienced during your procedure.

Sedation dentistry is beneficial because it reduces anxiety. Many patients put off their dental appointments because the thought of having a dental procedure, even an exam, is very anxiety provoking. Sedation dentistry helps alleviate these issues.

Sedation dentistry will also mitigate your tooth and gum sensitivity, which in turn will reduce your gag reflex.

Finally, sedation dentistry allows INSPIRE DENTAL OF ALEXANDRIA to work faster, more efficiently and effectively, which means your procedure will be completed quicker and your dental appointment will be finished sooner.

RESTORATIVE
DENTISTRY

Even with the best of diligence to maintain your oral health things don’t go as planned. Once in a while, and you might find that your teeth need to be restored or replaced. Missing, cracked, damaged, or even decayed teeth will dull your smile. Did you know it can also affect your oral health? At Inspire Dental of Alexandria we offer restorative dentistry to ensure that your teeth and oral health are back to their former state.

COMSETIC
DENTISTRY

It is important to feel confident in your smile, because being confident in your smile means being confident in yourself. Despite this, many people walk around every day, resigned to the fact that their smile is what it is and there is really nothing they can do to change it. But what if that was not the case? What if improving the aesthetic appearance and/or functionality of your smile was easier than you thought?

IMPLANT
DENTISTRY

Almost 50 million Americans experience tooth-loss every year. Dental bridges have traditionally been the best option if you are in this situation. However, there have been continual technological advancements regarding different types of dental implants. Dental implants are becoming both a common and popular procedure to restore a missing tooth or teeth.

The Different Levels of Sedation

There are several sedation levels we can choose from, which include: local anesthesia, nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and intravenous sedation.  The best level is usually matched to the type of procedure being performed, but usually, you will be given several choices to help you feel comfortable and less anxious during your appointment.

  • Mild Sedation: If our goal is simply to relieve your anxiety, then this will be the preferred choice. Mild sedation lessens your anxiety level but will also decrease the level of any discomfort experienced.  Sometimes, it can eliminate the pain all together.
  • Medium Sedation: Medium sedation will be the better choice if your procedure is more intense or invasive. During medium sedation, you will be in a deeper state of relaxation. It is not uncommon that amnesia will be experienced from this level.  With this level you will need someone to drive you home following your procedure.

The Types of Dental Sedation Available

The sedation options INSPIRE DENTAL OF ALEXANDRIA can offer will be classified as one of two types: conscious sedation and general anesthesia.  During a procedure using conscious sedation, your consciousness is merely depressed. General anesthesia, on the other hand, means that you are completely unconscious for the entire procedure.  You will be unable to feel anything during your procedure and you will have no memory of the procedure.

The methods we can use to deliver or administer the sedation dentistry to you include:

  • Nitrous Oxide: Nitrous oxide is our mildest dental sedation option and is also the most common. The process for administering Nitrous Oxide involves using a mouthpiece. As we apply the Nitrous Oxide, you will enter a calming and relaxed state. This process then reduces both the anxiety and discomfort that is associated with your dental procedure.
  • Oral Sedation: A slightly more intense form of sedation is Oral Sedation. This means the application of an anxiety medication orally to induce a deeper state of calm for you.  The calming effect could last past your procedure. As a result, you will not be allowed to drive following your procedure.
  • IV Sedation: IV, or Intravenous Sedation, is the most intense level of sedation we offer. During IV Sedation, you enter a state of unconsciousness. It is not unusual for you to experience bouts of amnesia both before and after your procedure.  As before with the Oral Sedation procedure, you cannot drive after the procedure.

WHAT OUR DENTAL PATIENTS SAY

5 star

My family has been seeing Dr. White through more than a decade of teeth cleanings, tooth injuries, teeth grinding, cavities, caps, root canal... you name it. The office is 30 minutes away but we wouldn't consider another dentist office. It's not just that Dr. White is a great professional, it's that he and his family run a great office. Scheduling, insurance, hygienists, hours -- everything about interacting with them is first rate.Everybody is knowledgeable, thorough, and kind. They take major insurance, and have even given me advice on which options to select. ...and Dr. White is a big Nats fan, which is a bonus in my book any day.
