Dental Bridges

in Alexandria, VA

A dental bridge can be used to replace either one or several missing teeth at one time. Dental bridges are used to close the gap between teeth. They close or bridge the gap between two teeth. A dental bridge is made up of two major components. The first part is known as the pontic, which is an artificial crown or tooth. In cases where more than one tooth needs to be replaced, several pontics will be used. The second part of the dental bridge is the supporting structure that holds the false tooth in place.

The entire team at INSPIRE DENTAL OF ALEXANDRIA shares an office goal. Is a Dental Bridge Appropriate for You?

There are a couple types of dental bridges that can be used to replace missing teeth. The kind of bridge we will use depends on how many teeth you are missing, the location, and the condition of your neighboring teeth. Other solutions that might be considered for treating your missing teeth could include crowns, dental implants, and even partial dentures. It is important to consult with INSPIRE DENTAL OF ALEXANDRIA to review the options when it comes to restoring the desired look and feel of your teeth and your smile. Choosing the right treatment for you is vital to ensure your teeth and smile are healthy for years to come.

The Benefits of Placing a Dental Bridge

The benefits of you having a dental bridge fitted far outweigh any risks associated with them. Having a false tooth placed in the gap or space where a tooth is missing will reduce the opportunity for the adjoining teeth to shift or drift into that space.

While the root space cannot be held, the physical space above the gumline can be controlled and will stop the movement of your other teeth. Another benefit of considering a dental bridge includes the completion of your bite. This includes the correct alignment and the proper contact of teeth which is essential to reducing the risk of any jaw problems, discomfort or pain, and premature wearing of the enamel.

Another important benefit includes maintaining the natural look of your face. Missing teeth will cause the skin on the cheek to sag, which will make you look older. Having a complete set of teeth also helps you look younger. Having a dental bridge placed will also improve your self-esteem and your self-confidence.

RESTORATIVE
DENTISTRY

Even with the best of diligence to maintain your oral health things don’t go as planned. Once in a while, and you might find that your teeth need to be restored or replaced. Missing, cracked, damaged, or even decayed teeth will dull your smile. Did you know it can also affect your oral health? At Inspire Dental of Alexandria we offer restorative dentistry to ensure that your teeth and oral health are back to their former state.

COMSETIC
DENTISTRY

It is important to feel confident in your smile, because being confident in your smile means being confident in yourself. Despite this, many people walk around every day, resigned to the fact that their smile is what it is and there is really nothing they can do to change it. But what if that was not the case? What if improving the aesthetic appearance and/or functionality of your smile was easier than you thought?

IMPLANT
DENTISTRY

Almost 50 million Americans experience tooth-loss every year. Dental bridges have traditionally been the best option if you are in this situation. However, there have been continual technological advancements regarding different types of dental implants. Dental implants are becoming both a common and popular procedure to restore a missing tooth or teeth.

Consider These Factors When Evaluating a Dental Bridge Solution

There are a few things to evaluate when it comes to considering a dental bridge treatment. For example, over some time the metal bands used in one version of a bridge can begin to wear away the natural teeth that support the false tooth. This type of bridge can also turn the abutment teeth grey over time. Depending on the specific location of the bridge in your mouth, you might not be concerned with the aesthetics of a metal-band bridge. Bridges can also be either fixed or partial, which means they can be removed.

The Different Versions of Dental Bridges

The most common type of dental bridge involves placing crowns over the teeth on both sides of the artificial tooth. These abutment crowns on each side provide the suspending support for the artificial tooth, literally creating three new teeth in a row. Another version of a dental bridge relies on using metal or ceramic wings or bands for support instead of crowns. The bands are fused onto the abutment teeth to support the new bridge. Both are reasonable solutions depending on the condition of the neighboring natural teeth.

How Is the Dental Bridge Created?

Dental bridges can be made from long-lasting materials such as porcelain or zirconia. The supporting crowns used to support the bridge are usually made of porcelain. You may choose a metal alloy or even gold, depending on your preferences. Glass is sometimes added to the porcelain mixture to create a shine, like your natural teeth. No matter what the bridge crowns are made from, proper care for them is vital for their longevity and continued durability.

WHAT OUR DENTAL PATIENTS SAY

5 star

My family has been seeing Dr. White through more than a decade of teeth cleanings, tooth injuries, teeth grinding, cavities, caps, root canal... you name it. The office is 30 minutes away but we wouldn't consider another dentist office. It's not just that Dr. White is a great professional, it's that he and his family run a great office. Scheduling, insurance, hygienists, hours -- everything about interacting with them is first rate.Everybody is knowledgeable, thorough, and kind. They take major insurance, and have even given me advice on which options to select. ...and Dr. White is a big Nats fan, which is a bonus in my book any day.

The Dental Bridge Procedure

The procedure of having your dental bridge placed can be done in a few simple steps at INSPIRE DENTAL OF ALEXANDRIA. The first step involves necessary prep work of the abutment teeth that will support the bridge. The next step will be to make either a physical or digital impression of the supporting teeth so that the dental lab can create your bridge.

The mold, or digital scan, will be sent to a dental lab, and within a few weeks the bridge will arrive at INSPIRE DENTAL OF ALEXANDRIA and be ready to place on your teeth. We will fit the bridge first to make sure it is the proper size, shape, color, and texture. Then we will adhere the new bridge to the supporting teeth with either dental bonding cement for the crowns or for the bands.

Proper Aftercare

It is essential to care for your new dental bridge in the same fashion you would care for your natural teeth. If they are not properly cared for, dental bridges will cause irritation, infection and even decay to your natural teeth. It is important to maintain your regular preventative program of scheduling dental appointments every six months following the placement of your dental bridge.

Special tools could be beneficial in helping you clean the bridge including threaded floss, dental picks, and water flossers for good oral health and hygiene. Continuing to brush your natural teeth will be critical to the success of the dental bridge.
